Kerry Way, 12 daagse trektocht langs B&Bs

Vanuit het hart van de County of Kerry volgt u bij “The Kerry Way” de oevers van de Kenmare River. Dagelijks geniet u van vergezichten over het Beara Peninsula, The Isles of Bull & Cow en de Caha Mountains. Wandelend over een oude boterroute, die in vroeger tijden door de boeren werd gebruikt om zuivelproducten naar de markt te brengen, bereikt u Caherdaniel, eens de woonplaats van de beroemde Ierse dichter Daniel O’Connell. Een karrenspoor leidt u verder. Als het schiereiland Dingle langzaam in zicht komt, eindigt de 8-daagse reis; heeft u twaalf dagen de tijd dan sluit u de reis af in de heuvels van de Macgillycuddy’s Reeks.

6. Rustdag in Foilmore.

8. Waterville-Caherdaniel (15 km/5 uur, ↕ 200 meter).
9. Caherdaniel-Sneem (19 km/6 uur, ↕ 280 meter).
10. Sneem-Kenmare (22 of 30 km/ 6 of 8 uur, ↕ 50 meter).
11. Kenmare-Killarney (25 km/7 uur, ↕ 550 meter).

Bijzonderheden
Prijs extra nacht op aanvraag. Hond niet toegestaan. Te boeken van april t/m oktober. Openbaar vervoer advies: vliegreis naar Dublin, Shannon of Cork; trein of bus (niet op zondagen) naar Killarney (vanaf € 45 enkele reis). U kunt ook met de taxi van vliegveld Shannon of Cork naar Killarney (circa € 180/120 per rit). In een dag terug naar Nederland vanuit Killarney (dus zonder extra nacht in Cork) is haalbaar op zondag, woensdag en vrijdag, soms ook op maandag of dinsdag. Busdiensten op zondagen zijn zéér beperkt, dus reizen van en naar Ierland op zondagen is af te raden.

Uitgebreid dagschema

DAY 1: Arrival in Shannon or Cork. Transfer by bus to Killarney. The town is world renowned due more to the unsurpassed beauty of the setting than to any historical or architectural features, but is an interesting place to stay with lots to see and do.

DAY 2: Walk Killarney to Black Valley, along the lake shore through Killarney National Park, Torc Waterfall, and native oak forests. The Way is well marked and a pleasant start to the tour. Finish at Lord Brandon’s Cottage at the head of the Upper Lake. Overnight in the remote Black Valley 22km Ascent 400m, approx. walking time 7 hours

DAY 3: Walk Black Valley to Glencar. Old green roads and mountain sheep country, under the magnificent Magillicuddy Reeks and Carrauntohill, Ireland’s highest mountain. The Black Valley passes into the Bridia Valley and mountain farming communities are all that is to be found here. Old roads from settlements go by the magnificent Lough Acoose under the Reeks to Glencar on the Caragh River.  23km, Ascent 300m, approx. walking time 6/7 hours

DAY 4: Glencar to Glenbeigh, through old woodlands of Glencar and the lovely Blackstones Bridge. The route climbs above Caragh Lake then crosses Seefin Mountain via the Windy Gap with views of Dingle Bay. Descend through the Cummergporm Glen to the seaside village of Glenbeigh 13km Ascent 200m, approx. walking time 4 hours
            
DAY 5: Walk from Glenbeigh to Foilmore near Cahirciveen, with views over Dingle You’re your route passes the magnificent Rosbeigh Beach with stunning views over Dingle Bay, before walking through the Foilmore valley overlooked by the majestic Knocknadobar. 19/23km, Ascent 300m, approx. 7 hours walking

DAY 6: Free day in Foilmore with a couple of options. Transfer to Cahirciveen to take a ferry to Valentia Island and walk on the island (11km). Boat trip from Portmagee to the Skellig Islands (45 minutes, fare not included), spectacular scenery with 5th century monastic remains.

DAY 7: Walk to Waterville through the hinterland of Cahirciveen. The route passes through turf bogs and pine forest. Some short climbs give views over Valentia Island and the western end of the peninsula.  Overnight in Waterville, a colourful coastal village. 25km, Ascent 350m, approx. 7 hours walking

DAY 8: Waterville to Caherdaniel via the coast. Today you are doing a wonderfully scenic route along the coast. It is a short walk and time take a detour at Derrynane to visit Derrynane House and gardens. It is the home of Daniel O’Connell, called ”The Liberator” and father of Catholic Emancipation during the 19th century.  15km. Ascent 200m, approx. 5 hours walking

DAY 9: Walk Caherdaniel to Sneem on the “old Butter road” where butter was transported to Cork in the 19th century. The Way climbs again on the foothills of Eagle Hill and a short detour take you to the 3rd century stone built Staigue Fort. Your route stays above the main Ring of Kerry road, following rocky paths through sheep country to Sneem.  19km. Ascent 280m, approx. 6 hours walking

DAY 10: Sneem to Kenmare via Tahilla and Blackwaterbridge. This walk takes you along the rocky shoreline of Kenmare Bay, easy walking through forest and the estate of Dromore Castle. The delightful Blackwater Bridge spans the Blackwater River coming from high in the Macgillycuddy Reeks. Kenmare is an interesting and colourful market town, on the banks of the Roughty River where it opens up into Kenmare Bay. It was founded in 1670 and settled by a handful of Englishmen, who built a prosperous fishing industry and an ironworks. 22 or 30km. Ascent 50m, approx. walking time 6 / 8 hours

DAY 11: Walk to Killarney on the “Old Kenmare Road” a delightful pass between Peakeen & Knockanaguish mountains. Descend through Killarney National Park, old oak forests, lichens, red deer, views over the Lakes of Killarney. The end of the Way passes 18th century Muckross House and Gardens and into the tourist town of Killarney.  25km. Ascent 550m, approx. walking time 7 hours

DAY 12: Departure by bus or train from Killarney.
